Got a chance to buy a running, REALLY good looking 30. Origional rear steel. Front tires up and in good shape. Wide rears with cup lugs. Owner wants $2,500. Whats your thoughts on the price?

Farmallb, Hard to say there are not many
for sale these days. I know when Tom Fleming get his done he will have more than that into it.
If you could work on him a little I would say your not way out. oldiron29

I have run one up to $2700 (loose non running, had a dual powerlift) on a sale and let it go. At another sale a running one with overdrive brought $1700. If its in good condition you can't go wrong. Rebuilding a basket case will cost more than what he's asking. These old handcrankers just don't bring big money.

I bought an F-30 for scrap price. Put another $400 in it to haul it home (gas, food, hotel 1 night). It is not running, and yet it is all there.

I estimate that I will have $2000 in the engine alone when I am done between parts and machine shop.

I'll have another $800 - $1000 in gaskets, parts, paint, etc, etc. and that is me doing most of the work. If the clutch ends up being bad, there is another $300 - $500 to redo all that's involved there.

so, let's add up what I will potentially end up paying for a NON-running, basket case 1936 F-30. $4500 (if I am lucky).

so, buy it. if not, it is still a very fair price. I live in Pa, and it is just killin' me to see the F-30's out west, running, at reasonable prices. Minimum for me to personally haul one back is around $1 per mile +/- if it is more than a day trip. There is what appears to be a decent one on this site in the "for sale" adds in Arkansas, and I priced having i hauled back to Pa: $2100

If you want one, and that price is ok to your pocketbook, then get it.

Edit is not working, so I will give you a short example:

Valves, valve guides, valve springs, valve seats (i need them) parts only: $85 per valve opening. x 8 = $680 and that just does the head.

Rings? $89 a set. x 4 sets = $356

so add in gaskets, I need a connecting rod, and possibly a piston/sleeve and on and on. Won't be long and $2000 will be gone.

I will, however, spend it. over time. I love to make these old girls run again. I could blow the same amount at Disney world (not in this lifetime), and have nothing to show for it except a set of Mickey mouse ears and an empty bank account.

Tom-with the prices you quoted in your reply there for sure needs to be a ring price modification, we will sell you a full set for less than $89. The other engine parts are expensive sure but not as bad as most think. If you want some reasonable prices on F series parts we will gladly help you out. Alderson tractor 641-624-2275

Thanks F20, you know, I need to double check. The price for the rings could have been for a set, not per piston. The price list I was looking at was not clear. I appreciate the post.

I guess the point I am trying to make is that $2500 for a good running F-30 is a fair price....at least here in Pennsylvania. When I start to buy parts, I will check you guys out.

I have a 10-20 that was a basket case and can attest to the fact that I have a least twice what it's worth in it. If I could buy a good looking good running F-30 for $2,500.00 ( and I had the money :( ) I would probably do it. Then again I like buying junk and fixing it but it doesn't make financial sense.

I am about 30 miles north east of Pittsburgh in a town call Natrona Heights. I grew up about 90 miles north of Pittsburgh in a small town near Conneaut Lake, Pa. called Harmonsburg. I still have the families place on my mom's side, in Conneaut Lake. I store most of my tractor's there, and keep a couple with me in Natrona while I am working on them.

Where are you located?

I'm about 60 miles east of Pittsburgh. 15 miles from Johnstown. I was just wondering how close you were. I like to see others from PA on here.

Yup, used to have family in Johnstown. About an hour ride from me. Maybe we can hook up as some shows this spring.

Haha, I wish, my tractor is far from show quality, and i really don't have a way to haul yet. I am getting there though. I'm 19 in college but I'm working on a collection. But give me a couple years and I'll hopefully have some nice show tractors. Which shows do you take yours to?

Wow pretty small world. Harmonsburg huh? I'm from Linesville, born and raised. Wife's from Conneaut Lake, and we now live in Jamestown. Who would have thought?
