posted on the t talk too but i need a quick answer so im going to ask here too, im replacing the starter drive on my '49 cub, have it off, and the tailhousing off too, there is a washer behind the drive assembley, where it goes in the bushing in the housing, it seems too small to be removed, so i can slide the drive off, i cant find a clip or anything to realease it, does it come off, or do i need to dissassemble the whole starter and remove it that way?

Without a picture it is hard to see what you have there. Look at the end & see if it is a 2 piece washer. If it is, tap the outside towards the drive & there should be a round snap ring in a groove in the shaft that you have to remove. Maybe this helps & maybe you have something entirely different.

Hi ericlb,

You have to push the big washer you talked about towards the drive assembly. Then you will see a rond circlip remove this one and you will be able to remove the drive assy.

thanks guys i got it off, got the new one on and back on the tractor now, at least it stays engaged with the flywheel now, the flywheel looked ok as far as teeth and wear, next mag points, im trying to get this tractor to start in cold weather, it has gas, and looking inthe archives the next most likley problem is worn or mis adjusted mag points, it starts fine when its warm out
