Farmall H head removal

(quoted from post at 13:00:22 11/24/10) Does the steering shaft have to be removed to remove head on Farmall H? Thank you.

Some folks claim you can do it without removing the steering shaft, but I've never been able to even get the valve cover off without first removing the steering shaft.

I've had the head off when I did the head gasket on my H and I did not remove the shaft. It got in the way of the torque wrench a bit, but it was okay. I can see the argument that you might as well take it off and save the trouble but it is possible to leave it on if you'd rather.

I didn't have a problem with the shaft in place.

I am now wondering if there are variations on the H model tractors. I have never had a problem with the H models but the M was a problem. Are they intermixing them or can someone answer this for me?
