Original Engine in a Super A or not?? - PICTURES

I just bought a Farmall Super A tractor yesterday, and after a good inspection of it, we noticed it has a water pump. From our expeirence, the Super A didn't have a water pump, but the Farmall 100 and later tractors did. The serial number of the tractor is 274,xxx ; and the engine serial number of the tractor is 282,xxx. Please help me identify what model motor is in my tractor (moreless what tractor it may have came from), and is it possible that some Super A tractors had a water pump, and maybe the motor is original. From www.external_link and using the TRACTOR SERIAL NUMBER, I see that the tractor is a 1949 model. That is why I am concerned that the engine isn't original. Thanks so much. If you need more info than I have provided, let me know and I will promptly respond with my best answer. THANKS>

Hey guys any help is appreciated. I just bought some breaker points for it and they actually weren't the right o.es lime they usually are. I was able to make them work, but apparently the distributor is a little different. Also, I noticed there is a ventilation tube on the top of the valve cover running down to the bottom of the oil filter housing.

Many SA engines had water pumps also a water pump is readily available and simple to install, a breather off the valve cover with the tube running down ending near the oil filter is also on the SA engines as is a dipstick for checking the oil level, a SA engine will also have a mount pad for a hyd. pump, the S/N of my SA engine is FAA M 258676 which I believe is a 49 engine but can't remember for sure. It really makes no difference in my book so 60 years later as long it starts and runs good.

(quoted from post at 10:11:20 11/23/10) Hey guys any help is appreciated. I just bought some breaker points for it and they actually weren't the right o.es lime they usually are. The letter series and early numbered series Farmalls all had either the H4 magneto, or the IH battery ignition distributor, and the tune up parts are all the same for the magneto, and all the same for the distributor. It is possible to have a Delco distributor, but the contact points for the Delco will NOT interchange with the IH distributor, or vice-versa.

We also just noticed that the hydraulic pump from another Super A wouldn't fit this one. We had an extra pump, and decided to replace the one on the tractor because it was leaking a little bit; but wouldn't fit. Its odd because I thought all of those parts were interchangable.

Oh yea, forgot to mention that my distributor on the tractor has some sort of fitting on the bottom of it where it is bolted to the engine. Never seen that "extra" fitting before either.

All of these Tell-Tell signs are telling me its not the original engine, but I'd sure like to know what its from .

I"m just trying to identify if this is the original engine or not
because we are in the process of re-doing it. Our tractor
serial number corresponds to a 49 and the engine has
petcocks and no dipstick. We haven"t seen the breather tube
on the crankcase before either. Also, since the points we got
weren"t right like usual made me believe its a little different
one.

Here are some pictures if that will help identify.....Like I said, to me it looks like its a Super A engine, but it could have came from a different model tractor and thats why the distributor is different as well as some other things I've noticed. If you look close on the distributor you'll see the extra fitting on the bottom that I was talking about. THere are also traces of ORANGE paint on the distributor too. When I ordered the correct set of breaker points for the tractor, the rubbing block was turned 180 degrees from what it was supposed to be at. Don't know if the distributor is a different one, or if the points were just messed up from the parts house.

The thing on the distributor is a drive for a tach, from a later tractor. There have been reports of replacement ignition points with the rub block installed backwards. The extra tube into the rocker cover reminds me of an old-time fix to oil the valve train after an internal oil passage gets plugged up. I don't know if that is what it is or not. Maybe some &^%* replaced the hollow oil feed stud with a solid stud.
