What's the proper oil to run in a gas 460 Farmall? Can I run 15w-40 diesel oil?

Yes, the 15w-40 seems to be the motor oil of choice for these old tractors.

It depends upon whether it is gas or diesel. If you do not use a low ash (.5% or less ash content) you will be replacing exhaust valves quite often if it is a working tractor.

Those engines have a problem with carbon buildup on the exhaust valve stems which can cause the valve to stick open when under load. It only takes about a second to torch the valve if it sticks open a little.

Diesel oil is not going to be low ash. Usually one of the specifications for diesel oil is a high ash content, sometimes around 2%, to compensate for the sulfur in the fuel. When sulfur is left after the combustion process it can combine with water to become sulfuric acid. The ash content is in the oil to neutralize this acid.
