340 Row Crop as a puller

I have a couple of 340's that we are overhauling and intend on doing the local antique pulls. One is a RC and the other is a wide front.

In the tractor pulling forum the consensus is that these tractors are nothing more then a C with more RPM. I must be off my rocker as I watch a 340 RC out pull 300's, M's, Cockshutt 30's every year.

What should I look out for when we tear down these tractors? T/A's are out on both of them. I'll be opening the motor on the row crop and while in there I'd like to do what I can to bump the power.

The C135 doesn't seem to have a lot of info about rebuilding or adding some more power.

i hardly think so, how will a 340 out pull an M or cockshutt 30.its not even in the same class. probably in class 1 while the the other 2 in class 2 or 3 depending on their weight. you may pull more feet but your not pulling the same load as the other two.

Actually, the Farmall C-Super C was replaced by the 230, which was replaced by the 240. The next bigger tractor in the line up was the 460, which left quite a gap between the 240 and the 460, so IH engineered and built the 340 to fill in that gap. The 340 may have shared a few components with the smaller tractors, but basically it was a brand new design.

Our classes around here go by tractor and driver weight only. No distinct classes. If you can weigh into the class, you can pull. Hence the 340 against the other tractors I mentioned.

There appears to be quite a bit of confusion on this little tractor.

exactly... tractor and driver weight.
class#1...4001-5000lbs
class#2...5001-6000
class#3...6001-7000
and so on
you would have to be fully loaded fluid and all,to get into class 2 with the lighter farmall Ms, as many are in class 3.maybe i will try it in the spring with my 340 to see what it does against the m'S

Ok, going with the classes layout, the 340 pulled past or up to the other tractors in all classes you mentioned.

well ya, traction is the thing, hear the snap? tractor was to small for that load of potatoes!
