300U driving me nuts

What started out as a rusty fuel tank has turned into not being able to get the tractor running again.

In August I cleaned the tank and sealed it with Red Kote. Used the tractor to get in my rye and vetch and a couple of food plots. I was running poor, popping and I started monkeying with the carb and it just refused to run. I figured I had some rust of something in there and put a carb kit on it. That didn't work, so I started looking at the ignition and replaced the plugs, wires, coil, condenser, and points. I can get it to fire and it will run if I advance the timing, but now I have fuel pouring out the bottom of the carb if it doesn't fire and it's not a little bit either. It used to fire right up and idle along. I never had to the use the choke and now I'm choking it and running down the battery cranking on it. Speaking of, I ended up getting the starter rebuilt too. Anyway, those new Mahindra utility tractors are starting to look real good.

Someone said it may have jumped time????

Once in a great while a new carb bowl gasket will stick far enough into the bowl to touch the float and interfere with its operation. Trim the inside edge of the gasket flush with the inside edge of the bowl, just to eliminate that possibility. Of course, all carb passages should be clean -- but that's probably preaching to the choir.

Don't give up on the 300U. She's well worth the trouble!

I took my time and pulled everything off starting with the carb and reset the timing based on the timing marks, made sure all the connections were good and it's running smooth.

with the carb apart really check out float and needle valve operation, and make sure your float isnt leaking or full of gas. i had a brand new out of the bag float with the little tab(brass) slighly bent down from handling i imagine and it drove me nuts with my carb flooding after rebuilding it. i pulled it apart 3 times and finally saw the problem and bent the tab up with a pair of needle nose and all was dandy.

oh and by the way i looked at those Mahindra tractors and wow, very very flimsy, not gonna see on of them toolin around 50 years from now.

BA,
Glad everything turned out well. Usually when I can't figure what's wrong I go back and start at the beginning and work my way forward. Like you did. It usually turns out that it was something simple that I missed or did wrong in the first place.
I have two 300U's that I have had for about 20 years that I used everyday for fresh veg's. I can't remember that last time I changed points and plugs and they are both all original 6v systems and start and run smooth. If either one goes south on me now it can rest in peace, it served me well and did a good job.
