Farmall H hydraulic oil in belly pump

SAE 30W non-detergent engine oil only - Detergent oil will foam if used in that application and why non-detergent is specifically noted in the operator's manual.

Non-detergent 30w was the original spec. Now a days, lots of guys(myself included) use hytrans so that in the case you ever use equipment that is used on tractors with a shared hydraulic/transmission system, the oil won't be cross contaminated.

Also, the general consensus is to use a 15-40 multiweight oil in the engine.

I agree with you and Jim as well but the problem with Hy-Tran in the H and M belly pumps is keeping the fluid in the system and not on the floor. Both my H and M have Heisler 9 speeds which have belly pump disconnects and also I don't use the hydraulics on them for anything anyway so I just keep the oil in them for protection. I do use my hydraulics on the Super C and Super MTA but they are designed for Hy-Tran being required in those systems and so noted in the operator's manual. If you use Hy-Tran in belly pumps on a H or M the seals will most likely need to be refreshed to reduce leaks I would think.

I think the foaming is a rumor, we used detergent in my dad's H in the 50's, heavy use, no problems. The manual states non-detergent because detergent was non-existent or just beginning to be available. However there is nothing wrong with using non-detergent in the hydraulic system. We just did not keep two kinds of oil.

If it is leaking with hytran, it is also leaking with 30wt. Just less dramatically. another solution is thicker viscosity hydraulic oil, or a blend. As long as it is a lubricant, and not foamy, it will probably be happy in the reservoir. Jim

Hydraulic fluids are very high detergent oils, higher than most engine oils. So much for foaming. All detergent oils have a foam dispersent additive whereas non detergent oils do not. If an engine with hydraulic lifters, where foaming will kill performance, uses a high detergent oil this should tell you how a detergent oil will perform.

HY-tran will work fine, only if your seals are not already leaking, they will be. When hy-tran was put in my super H, it blew out all of my seals, because hydraulic oil is too thin, for a system that was designed to work with motor oil. I would suggest using 30 weight, as that what was originally called for. Only of course do NOT use detergent oil as it will foam. Also do not use this with modern day implements that take hydraulic oil. I have also heard of guys using 90 weight gear lube, with good sucess. only do not expect to be able to use this in any kind of cold weather, as it will be like molassas.
