Was Crusing Around The North Branch Area Of Minnesota And Spotted A Old Gas Start Diesel In The Trees Here To Find It's A Super MTA Diesel Factory Wide Front Very Straight Tires Shot Motor Wont Turn Over Anymore Old Farmer Said It Turned Over In 2007 But Since Knee Surgery He Cant Get To It Anymore He Was Thinking 2500 What Do You Guys Think?

Buy it. It is worth it and more. If it ran three years ago you can fix it. Parts are not cheap, but that is a desirable tractor. Jim

IF it were any other tractor, (H,M,400, ECT.) $2500 with the condition you described is too much. However, You've found a dream tractor: It needs some work, but is complete, And is the one tractor that almost every red-blooded IH man wants. I feel they are over priced and over-rated. You can buy a decent to nice running 400 diesel for that. That being said, Of course I want a SMTAD. Who dosen't? If you don't buy it, your neighbor who also reads this forum will. And, you'll have a tractor that once you get it running, which should not be a big deal, It will be worth more money than you have into it.

There is a D-264 out of a 400 that is currently listed for $9.99 on eBay. It's in the Michigan thumb area. Seller says it runs. Sure would make a good parts engine for your identical SMTAD engine.

I had a chance to buy a SMD-TA a couple years ago for $1,600. Tractor actually ran fairly decently but it had been cobbled up by a previous owner. Homemade 3pt hitch, M seat & support, battery moved to the side of the frame, wfe from a combine, enough hyd hoses to make it look like a plumbers nightmare, tires shot, exhaust manifold had a large hole & the fuel pump leake, grill shot, It would have taken a lot of time & money to redo it. I let others talk me out of it Owner ended up selling it on e-bay for $6,000 and the buyer was tickled pink to get it.

The owner was a young friend who needed the money & I'm glad it got what he did for it but I still kick myself for not buying it. Even if I had put it the corner of the shop & took several years to restore it. Like said, not many out there, go for it.

I think you should already be back there with cash- and you may already be too late. I've got 2 SMD's, a Stage 1 and a Stage 2, you've found the missing link

Danny,

Great find, they are neat tractors to restore and own. I'm finally going to try to finish the restoration on my SMTAD this winter over in Ham Lake. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or want to compare notes.
