Oil question

I'm still working through the issues on my recently acquired and long neglected C. The manual recommends straight 30 weight for temps above 32. I'm guessing multi-visc oils were not around back then. Is there any reason I can't run a multi, say 10W or even 5W-30? I live in Michigan, and we get some pretty cold weather, although I don't intend on running much if at all this winter.

I would not go as far as 5w, but 10-30, 0r 10-40, or 15-40 Will do just fine. Be sure to change out the filter. Dig the square seal out of the groove at the oil filter housing, and replace. It will be brittle and shiny like iron, it is important to get a new seal with the oil filter. Jim

As was stated, 10w-30 or 15-40 will be just fine.

One suggestion though: If that tractor never ran detergent oil, I would take down the oil pan and scrape the sludge out of the bottom of it before running it on detergent oil. The detergent might break that sludge loose and get it in places that might plug up small oil passages.

Good Idea. When the plug is pulled, put a piece of wire up the hole and scrape around on the bottom. If sludge is found, both the pan, and VC should be pulled to clean it down. (don't revert to Non-detergent oil, it is no longer a reasonable choice). Jim

General comment: If you are going to take the pan off, is it the backplate on oil pump that warps and reduces oil pressure? It has been mentioned many time before but my mind doesn't recall details as well any more. Somebody want to add details on oil pump as long as they are taking pan off? ag
