Some replys to a post below concerning a 460 mentioned they would suggest a 450 over a 460. I'm curious as to why - what is it that you think makes a 450 the better of the 2 tractors.

The last 450's with factory 12 volt and factory power steering are probably the best tractors ever built ever built in America. They have the rugged reliability of the classic M, but with more power and modern comfort and convenience.

A 450 will walk all over a 460 for pulling power. The 460 has no lugging power. Also, the 460 seems to be a longer tractor to maneuver than the 450/M tractors. I never measured, but It probably is with the 6 cyl. engine. Actuall, a good 450 or Super M will make a 560 beg for mercy!

that would be the M beggin for mercey, how can you "talk" so silly, have you experienced workin both tractors? dos'nt even make sense. even at the tractor pulls the m's are behind.

I think the 450 being the best tractor ever built in America is a pretty strong statement. A good reliable tractor, in it's day, I could buy. Better than a 460, probably. More torque than a 460, definately. We had a 450 gas on the ranch I worked on in SD in the summer of '64 and pulled a 5x14" plow in wheat stubble, which was pretty darned good.
There are a lot of good tractors out there, so "best' is a little too much. Best I ever ran was a 4640 JD, and it's still working on a friend's farm with only one major overhaul on the engine. Granted, it's not the "heavy lifter" on the farm any more, but it still does a lot.

The 450 has 60 cubes on the 460.
The 450 has 1000lbs on the 460.

A lot has been said about the lugging power of the 450. Lugging power has a lot to do with the size of the piston. Because the 450 has more cubes and fewer pistons, its pistons are much larger.

The 450's pistons would be like soup cans, and the 460's pistons would be like rolls of lifesavers in terms of relative size.

Don't think the 460 is a "BAD" tractor. It's not the greatest, but it's far from an awful tractor.

The 450 has more lugging power because of the longer stroke. I have a 400D, 450 gas and a 560D. You can let the 400D pull down way under 1000 and it will keep going. You let that 560D get under 1300 and you'v lost it. Unless that M has a bilt motor it will never keep up to a 560. As far as the 450 over the 460 I'd take the 450 cause it worth more and will do more. The 560 replace the 450 the 460 replaced the 350.

If I had the choice between the two for actually farming with the 460 over the 450 only because the tractors were so smooth. Alot better balance of the motor. The M's 400 450 would rumble and shake. The 460 and 560 were smooth to operate. AS far as the look of the tractor I would choose 450 and older. Just my taste. If I needed more power I would bump up my tractor size.
