saginaw hitch for 1948 H

Hello i finally bought a saginaw Hitch for my farmall H. I pick it up monday.I plan on just one way hydraulics, having no down pressure for now,it comes with two cylinders. what would be the best way to hook up the hydraulics?? thanks john

Quick and easy and the cheapest way would be to connect the right hand cylinder to the belly pump outlet on the right side of the tractor, and then connect the left hand cylinder to the FRONT outlet on the left side of the tractor. If you have a loader on the tractor, then it gets a bit more complicated, and you will have to purchase and install a remote, dual control, hydraulic box.

if you want down pressure on the saginaw, you will need a open center spool valve. plumb from one of the front pressure outlets of the belly pump to the "in" on the spool, then plumb the "out" to the belly pump drain and use a pipe tee with a plug (so you can drain the oil to change it). then connect the two lines on the spool valve to the saginaw hitch. tee the up lines together, and also tee the down lines together. wire the belly pump control rod back to the always on position, then use the spool to control the hitch. there is a set of pins on the top rear of the saginaw that you can remove so the 3 pt will float. heres some pics of the set up on my m. my spool valve is a char lynn.

if you look at the control rod (with the loop) for the belly pump, you can see a second stop i welded on the control rod. it is set so that the pump rod can be hooked in the full on position, so i can shut the pump off from the seat.

Nice Pictures. I am planning on ordering a Saginaw 3pt for My '41 H, Will the 3pt work with original fenders and PTO guard in place?

What does your belt pulley drive?

Thanks
Don

yup the hitch will fit with the fenders and pto guard in place. the saginaw is a really nice hitch. on the belt pulley on this tractor is a haddican brothers 260 amp dc welder. this m also has an m+w 9 speed, wide front and char-lynn power steering. pretty handy old gal. its a hard worker, maybe someday i'll paint her!!

My 1948 farmall H is in good shape with a wide front end. Currently not using the belly pump,so i plan to plumb the hydraulics from the belly pump.I just replaced the oil with 30 weight non detergent.no loader on this tractor. Thanks for the responses & info.Looking forward to putting the hitch on.....john

very nice photos! I believe that i am going to go this way with two way hydraulics. Where can i get an open center spool valve? Is a place like Northern tool ok for the open center spool valve? Where did you get the V belt pully that is on the belt pully PTO?? thanks john

I'm going to have to steal you idea for keeping the swinging drawbar tight. I've got my roller on the bottom because there was too much slop in it. But the drawbar is also worn about halfway through. welding flat stock to the bolts ranks right up there with live power.
Thanks

thr swinging draw bar stops are square head bolts with a piece of flat stock welded on sideways.they just drop in the drawbar holes and keep it from swinging. just lift em out when you need some swing!!

yup, northern has the valves, or tractor supply, farm and fleet ect. you may want to get a tandem set so you can have a second remote outlet on the tractor too. the v pulley is off an old air compressor, a little fabricating and it bolts up to the belt pulley drive hub.

A few silly questions if I may?
When you install the 3 point and leave the draw bar on how do you get the bolts lined up on the draw bar holes and the hitch at the same time? Is it a a matter of being a balancing act. Cause when you loosen the bolts doesn't the draw bar fall off?? Is there a trick to it I am not seeing?

What are the advantages of floating 3 point?

What are the differences in the 3 pinning holes at the top mount for the top link?

thanks
ken

I use blocks to hold my drawbar in place when mounting Saginaw 3 pts. on my Farmalls.

A floating 3 pt. is handy when down pressure isn't needed,... bush hogging (for example).
Insert 2 pins and the Saginaw has down pressure,... comes in handy sometimes when bladeing or putting on tire chains.

The 3 pin holes (for the top link) effects the "pitch" of an implement when in the raised position. The "pitch" of an implement is reduced as the top link is moved to a higher hole.
