I have a farmall 400. The TA works great most of the time. But once in awhile when the TA is in low range (lever back) you can feel it go into high range but the lever is still back. Other times its in high range and you pull the lever back and it stays in high range. When it does shift into low range it works well. Is the TA going bad? Any suggestions. Thanks
 
If the clutch linkages are adjusted to the best they can be. The T/A clutch is not releasing or staying released. If the t/a clutch pressure plate and release bearing is good, check for lining comming loose on clutch plate or oil getting on it. Also check that the clutch carrier is not loose due to the retaining nut backing off. Other possibilities is a problem with the planet gears, shafts or bearings in the t/a unit that makes them not want to turn free when in t/a. If planet gears don't want to turn or lock up completly, the whole planet carrier unit turns as one unit just like in dirrect drive t/a even though the t/a clutch would be released. Another thing I was about to forget is sometimes the coupling between the t/a drive shaft and t/a sun gear shaft will slide back on the splines and keep pressure to the t/a clutch plate after release. They added a clip inside later splined couplings to keep that from happening.
 
Look in the archives for information from The Tractor Vet about TA adjustment. It is necessary to compensate for the pivot wear in the linkage to assure the correct disengagement spot in the pedal movement. It is important. Jim
 
You might want to open up the cover and look at your t/a clutch if you are positive it is adjusted correctly. See if your t/a pressure plate and disk are releasing and make sure you don"t have burnt or broken levers.
 
Is it possible the TA is slipping and then grabs giving you the feeling that it shifted. Poor oil can also give you this affect.
