HELP my first overhaul on a '44 H

Well I think that it is time for my first ever overhaul on my '44 H. She's burning oil, blowing blue smoke, loosing power, and I have some unburnt gas in the oil(I think). It starts and runs great but I think it's time. My question is as to what kit to get. I see on YT site that you can get kits with stepped or flat pistons. What should I do and why? Next, should I spend the extra time and money now on cam and rod bearings? I am not going to fully restore this, just want it working great for now and restore it with paint, tires, etc. it at sometime in my life. I have rebuilt snowmobiles before so I have some knowledge of the matter. What are your thoughts or hints?

The tisco Kits here are competative, and get good reviews most of the time. Figure on hoses, coolant, hytack, copper coat, oil, and clamps. I would check the clearance on the mains before pulling the engine. If they are within.002" I would do an inframe. and leave the mains alone. If it is leaking from the rear main, or out of spec, I would pull it out and mic the journals on mains and rods. Jim
