Farmall C - Diesel

Has anyone out there ever seen or tried putting a small diesel engine on a C?

If so, I am considering tackling a project of this nature. I"ve got an old C with a bad motor and are trying to figure out what to do with it.

Any info or ideas are welcomed.

IH France built a diesel version of the Farmall C, the Farmall Super FCD. It had a 123 cubic inch 4 cylinder diesel engine, almost identical in appearance to the gasoline engine except both the french diesel and gasoline engines moved the water pump to the top of the block behind the fan and driven by the fan shaft. IH Germany had a diesle version of the F-12 with a 132 cubic inch (3.25"x4" bore and stroke) diesel engine, the last version used in the Farmall D-25 tractor

IHC marketed the Farmall Super FCD and the FD235 in Europe in the late '50's. They are essentially a Super C/230 tractor with a IHC France-built 4 cylinder diesel engine.

If you could find an FCD/FD235 engine likely it would be a bolt-in swap. HOWEVER these tractors are rarer than hen's teeth in the U.S. (I was unaware they even existed until I spotted an FD235 at a show a couple years ago.) Consequently the chances of finding an FD235 engine are pretty slim.

OTOH a small 3 or 4 cylinder Kubota, Yanmar, Perkins, ThermoKing, etc. diesel could adapted to fit. Problem here is the little engines all spin faster than the original Super C gasser. You'd wind up with a speedy tractor that might not lug at slow speed like the OEM engine. (But it sure would be economical on fuel!)

there is a guy up here that put a diesel motor out of a 340 into a w4 . he said it was an easy task and it looked quite factory. he calls it his WD4.

There are two of them that i know about here in the states have been restored like new very neat tractors. That price is good.

I saw one of the french built tractors at the farm progress show a couple weeks ago. The injection pump is huge when compared to the engine size.

Thanks for the info. I had no idea IH made one. I was thinking about putting a newer diesel on one. This will be third project and wanted a bit of a challenge and end up with a unique working tractor to maintain a few acres.

Hendrik, how could a guy buy one of these French Diesels? Or is it even possible? I have seen one at the Red power round up. Sure would be neat to have

Look at French Ebay is one possibility. There are quite a few of the French Super FCC (gasoline) tractors in New Zealand but, as far as I know, none of the diesels.

Mark. Buy the one as advertised on Marktplaats (market place) (similar to eBay, and owned by eBay). I can help you with details and shipping. The seller of the one on Marktplaats lives less than 5 miles from me. Shipping may seem prohibitive but I know that regularly large containers, filled with vintage tractors and implements, are shipped across the Atlantic either way.
