That is kind of an open question. You never said what class your end goal was. That would be the major start. Tractor engines are no different than anything else.
- Displacement
- RPMs
- Fuel
- Timing
The first can get expensive. The second are not so bad. Most rules state an RPM limit. Don't run anything less and cheat them towards the high side. They usually give you 10% varience. Fuel - Matt Gall MoTec Engineering Tipton, IN Google him. He can open up the venturi and do some other magic. My SMTA is like another machine with the rebuilt carb. As for timing. I have no idea where mine is. It sure does start hard, but it lugs like crazy. I had a guy from my club time it and I didn't ask him what he did.

im going to be pulling it in 4000 4500 5000 pound class. it does not do to bad now but it needs more power to keep up with the rest in 5000.
thanks ill hsve to look him up.

That still doesn't answer the more important questions. Are you pulling in Division __, NATPA, county fair classes, antique classes or ??? Every pull has different rules that DRASTICALLY change what you can and can't do (and stay within the rules)
Division/NATPA Classes are very strict.
County fair/local pulls are generally run what you brung and hope you brought enough.
Antique clubs are generally strict, but not like the sanctioned classes.
I am not trying to be a dick, but your end goal is VERY important. There is no sense doing something that would get you kicked out of every pull. ie dropping a flat head Ford in an F-20. Very cool, but nobody will let you pull it. I have pictures I should post someday :D
If you want to build a motor there is a guy that used to frequent the board (be still may) that was pretty sharp. Don't remember his handle right now, but you will notice him when you see him. Go to the pulling section and look him up. You might as well not waste your time posting over there bc everybody is so tight lipped it is ridiculous. They are always afraid they will talk about the tip that will beat them.

The important question is (like sflem) asked...how suped up of a class do you intend to pull in? Pulling a straight H in Division 1 NATPA pulls will drive you nuts...kinda like pulling a stock JD B...not much you can do within the rules that will make you competitive in the 4500 or 5000 lb classes if you have good stout weighted up Super Cs and Super 66s pulling...after that you"re into JD As and IH Super Hs. One thing I have seen work is if you can find a donor H that had the low low low creeper 1st gear..."bout the only time I"ve seen an H beat the Super Cs.
You can rejet the carb a tad, but then you"ll be going through plugs when you"re not pulling, You can play with the governor spring to some extent.
Now if you are gonna jump up to division 3 or beyond, the sky"s the limit...well actually your wallet is the limit.
