Farmall Regular has hot spark and compression

We have a Farmall Regular that has hot spark and feels like it has good compression. Tractor ran with original E4a mag and died when it got hot so, I assumed it had a bad coil and switched to A F4 that I had as a spare and had been tested. Hand cranked tractor and it started and ran but, was running hot and backfiring so, I figured the timing was retarded and after running a few minutes I shut it down. Before changing timing I tried to hand start and no success, pulled it and started and died. Pulled again and nothing and blew oil out of air cleaner. Put new coil in mag as someone suggested and will only pull start and we ran 5 minutes and it ran fine but, will not crank start. Any ideas what is wrong.?Anyway to check compression? Old timer I took it too says he feels like the compression is good but knows of no way to check with out starter. Thanks for any help!

this is a crazy thing that happened to me. mag was seized on tractor. tractor got cranked over which sheared the half moon key in the mag coupler on engine side.replaced mag with another one and started tractor, ran good. then shut down and would not start. check timing, its out, whats goin on here. retime , it starts and runs then same story again. tear into it deeper and find half moon key sheared of in coupler.replaced the key and no more problem.timing stayed put. this was when i was 17 years old in 1974 and my first tractor, a 10-20 mccormick that i bought from nieghbour for 35.00 worth of picking rocks at 5.00 per day. And i fixed it all by my self. when i read "blew oil out of air cleaner" made me think of this story.

you are sure that the F4 was checked out and fully working? The reason I ask, is that the magnet on those need to be recharged when they get weak.

I had a problem with one that the tractor had to be pull started. After it was running, it ran like a champ. The impulse worked fine. Took it to a mag shop, and we determined that the magnet was weak. He charged the mag, and voila! Starts on a 1/4 turn now.

You may want to have that checked out.

Duanes, the E4a and the F-4 have different size drives! have you changed the shaft hud on the gear side? Yes the woodrif key may have come out or broke. Compression most be ok if tractor will run. You have a timing problem. I would start with #1 TDC and check all. If it is starving for fuel it will cough, but oil out the air breather
you got time problems. oldiron29

Yes,we changed hubs. I took one off of an F-20.Woodruff key looked fine when I put new hub on there.

Just called the guy and he said he did recharge the magnet and new coil and says the spark will jump 3/4 inch gap and is real blue. Still nothing. Won't even fire by putting fuel down priming cups. But starts when pulled.
