444, burned points

One thing Id suspect is a weak or leaky condensor or its just bad, that can contribute to premature points burn up plus a weaker spark. Also insure it has a good ground and its wire to points and that lil connection to points is good. Of course, excess coil current burns them up faster such as 6 volt unballasted coil use on a 12 volt tractor.

I will add to Johns great recommendations only one thing. If a coil is going bad it can be shorted internally and draw substantially more current than a good coil of the correct design/voltage.
3 amps to 3.5 amps is about max for current on a standard coil. Jim

The 444 uses a 6 volt coil. The resistance is the wire between the key switch and the starter solenoid. If that wire has been replaced an external resistor needs to be added to compensate for the loss of resistance in the wire.

You should need a resistor only if the wire between the key switch and the starter solenoid "I" terminal has been replaced. The original wire will look like it is made from steel rather than copper. There is a harness connector under the dash near the clutch pedal. If you unplug that connector you can measure the resistance of the wire between the solenoid end and the connector end. If the resistance is zero you need a resistor. If it is between about 1.4 to 1.8 ohms you should be fine.

If you need to add a resistor you can add it in the circuit either at the harness connector end under the dash or before it connects to the starter solenoid.
