pilot bushing (what exactly does it do?0

can anybody explain to me exactly what the pilot bushing does, and what could happen if it was bad etc.....53' Super c

It centers and supports the flywheel end of the clutch shaft and allows it to move independently from the flywheel when the clutch is disengaged.

Keeps the clutch shaft running smooth, and along with the release bearing prevents vibration or "chatter". I have not had a C clutch apart, I thought it was a bearing, not a bushing. The pilot bearing or whatever fits into the flywheel.

The pilot bushing allows the transmission input shaft to stop turning when the clutch is depressed.
When the pilot bushing fails or runs out of grease it is very difficult to change gears as transmission input shaft continues to turn causing grinding of gears when shifting. Unfortunately there is no method of lubing the pilot bushing without splitting the tractor.
We had C and SC in the 1950s, the SC had a loader on it and we replaced the bronze pilot bushing at least twice in the 6 years we owned the SC but never on the C.
