Hello guys. I'm going through the IH carb again on my 2606 with 263 engine. The inside of the carb body is all rusted up and the posts for float is rusted up. Any idea on how it got all rusted up? I scraped a layer of rust out of the bowl and it is from the carb body and not the tank.
For background info, I acidized the tank with muratic acid when I got it about 3 years ago cause of rust in the tank and put a valve and sediment bowl back on it. Last year I was getting some more rust from the tank in the sediment bowl so I acidized the tank again and this time used phosphoric acid.
Only thing is I probably didn't flush the tank very good and maybe left a little acid in it. I filled the tank which was shiny clean (the part I can see in front of the baffle) and noticed the the gas had a rusty color to it. Any rust fines settled out in the sediment bowl. Ran it last winter and spring with no problem. Always dumped the sediment bowl and checked the screen every time I ran it. Did some digging for part of a day about a month and a half ago and it ran fine. The gas in the sediment bowl just always had this reddish color to it.
Try to run it this weekend and it only ran for 5 to 10 minutes at a time and finally quit except it would run with starting fluid. I added 10 gal of gas to it thinking the old gas and little bit of acid may be the problem. It always had good flow going from the sediment bowl to the carb. Noticed the float was sticking and a tap with the wrench stopped that which I figured was making it flood out even when running.
It still wouldn't run with new gas so I drained it all and have acid in the tank again. I'm just not sure how the carb rusted up unless it was the acid in the gas doing it. I soaked it for a day in Berrymans and that cleans it but doesn't really remove rust. I sprayed it down with wd40 last night and am getting ready to soak the carb in acid to get rid of the rust. Thought I'd check here first. I don't plan on removing the tank at this point to treat or coat it. I have some screen sticking up into the tank to keep out any big chunks of rust.
I quit last night after cleaning out the orifices with carb cleaner spray and took a shot of carb cleaner in my eye and face. Guess I need to use safety glasses with that carb cleaner as it is under a lot of pressure.
