im still trying to find a woods mower for my cub,[1948] all the ones so far are over 1500 miles away, [ may have to bite it and go get one], i will need everything,im looking for the 42 single blade now as you all advised that a woods l59 may be a bit much for a cub but just right for an A, this cub never has had the pto even used, but im wondering while the mid mount or rear mount sycle bar mowers are really for cutting hay, what kind of a job will they do on weeds grass and roughstuff, by rough stuff it would be used on ground that has the usual gopher holes sticks and stuff, the farm is flat but im afraid of ruining the knives on one of these things, just wondering if i find one if i could use it what kind of cut does it leave?

We have a cub with a 42" woods mower. It's more akin to a bush hog with 2 short blades that are attached to the center disk. It has good power and mows well. The 140 mows much better though with a 6 ft width. I have a rear sickle on a 140 and I've gone through thick weeds, dirt, ant hills, and even trimmed azalea hedges with no problem so far. Sharpening the sections is a simple matter but I havn't needed to.

take a look or post over on the farmallcub.com board in the wanted section for a 42" mower.
there are a bunch out there.
the one for a reg cub will not properly fit a loboy and one for a loboy will not properly fit a reg cub.
as to the 59" being too much for a cub that has been argued to death. some people are happy with a 59 on a cub and some are not.
I have a loboy with a 59 and it will cut grass in 3rd gear if you can stay on it. I broke the belt on a 59 rear mount mowing heavy tall grass that had not been cut yet in July when I first got it.
my brother will only use a 42 or a cycle bar on his.
Good luck
Ron

the sickle mower doesnt really like a lot of trash, ie sticks ect. also, if you are not baling the sickle mower will also not like all the trash from the first cutting and will plug up the bar. if you are not going to mow often like your lawn, the 59 woods will be a handful for the cub, the smaller mower would be a better choice. i have a woods 59 on my cub and it pulls it fine for normal lawn maintenance, but,if you let the grass get to tall, it doesnt like it, you will need to mow twice.

I spent 5 or 6 of my teenage years with my butt in the seat of Pappy's Cub, when he was running a custom mowing service. We used several different mowers under the Cub over the years, but the Woods 42 was the most versatile. With the Woods 42, you could cut stuff from lawns to weeds higher than the hood, and make it all look good as long as you kept the blades sharp...and with the quick-change blades, there's no excuse NOT to keep your blades sharp.

The Woods 59 was probably better on 2"-3" lawns, but it pulled harder than the 42...which is natural, since it's 40% bigger, not to mention you're driving 3 mower spindles and bearings instead of one. The Danco/IH 5-foot rotary pulled even harder than the Woods 59, although I never quite understood why. Best on lawns that were 3" or less--and COMPLETELY dry--was the Mott Hammerknife flail mower. It pulled harder than the 42, but when conditions were right, you could leave a lawn looking like a carpet.

As far as a Cub sickle bar mower, there were a couple of different lengths...4-1/2 feet and 5-foot cutter bars, IIRC. If the cutter bar is sharp, and the stuff you're cutting isn't wet, you should have no problems with it plugging up as long as you match your ground travel speed to what you're cutting. Or at least that's my experience. We used the sickle bar mower on the Cub when mowing street rights-of-way and alleys, and cutting around fire hydrants for the town. Advantage of the sickle bar mower is, you don't have to drive over the area you're cutting...such as a ditch bank.

If your Cub is down on power, the 5-foot mowers will let you know in a hurry; the 42 and the sickle bar, not as much. As for the gopher holes, many a Cub front spindle housing has been cracked or broken by dropping a front wheel into a gopher hole. That's why there are so many Cubs out there with welded spindle housings.
