E4-A magneto trouble

Tractor (10-20) was running fine. Started missing on one cylinder, then two, then three, then quit. Now it will start on two, run a few seconds, then quit. I've cleaned the mag, set points, changed the cap. It actually has good spark on all four when turned by hand. I put a mag from a different tractor on it and it started right up. What am I missing?

That's probably your impulse coupling that's causing good spark when cranking. Your coil may be weak and check the magnets for magnetism using a screwdriver and touch them as they should attract that screwdriver with a good bit of effort. Hal

Magnet was re energized last winter. There is no condenser. Why would it fail while actually running?

I'm with with rustred, change the condenser. Yes there is one, it is not right by the points like a chevy distributor, it's further back in the mag by the coil. Takes a little more effort to access.

All mags I have seen have condensers to reduce point arcing, and provide crisp spark line. I could be wrong, but you might check that good mag for a condenser. Jim

There is most definitely a condenser in this mag. The condenser is actually soldered inside the rotating armature. It's not fun to replace as you have to take apart the end of the armature to access it. It does sound like it's the condenser to me also.
