Which 706 Is The Better Diesel?

My take is the German, though both are good, I read the forum as favoring the German. A neighbor had the German with no problems at all for 6 years (that I was there) he had it turned up only 10% but it was reliable. Jim

Day and night difference in the two . Go for the German if it is in good shape . The only down side to the German is that injection pump parts are getting really hard to find and they no longer make the thermostat fir them so they are hard to find .

They're both IH engines. IH had engine plants all over
the world- one was in Germany. Now they're navistar
plants.

Can't speak to anything other than the German. We bought one new in 1967 or 1968. The years kinda run together.

We had to overahul the engine about 20 years ago, been working ever since.

It is one fine engine. Has a good sound to it.
Back when diesel fuel was real diesel fuel it would really lay out a smoke trail.

I still use it about once a week. Thinking about giving it a good paint job.

The German , hands down. Drawback besides injection pump parts & thermostat being hard to find is the engine itself is quite a bit more expensive to overhaul. No big deal but it seems we have to replace the fuel shutoff cable on ours more than I think we should.

One really sweet running engine.

German hands down. The thermostat is easy to update. Just get the water pump carrier and water outlet off any newer 3-4-6 cylinder German diesel. It uses a automotive type thermostat that is readily available. I have an extra housing sitting in the shop if anyone needs one.
