IH 1066 Fuel Problem

I just bought a 1976 IH 1066, first IH i've ever owned. I like it alot, however, my wife was working my field with it and ran it Almost out of fuel (of course the gauge doesn't work) Anyway, by doing so, she ended up stirring up all the garbage in the bottom of the tank and the tractor doesn't run for long now as the fuel takes forever to seep thru the filters. I replaced the filters already and it ran like a top for about 5 minutes... Now it runs like crap as it can't get enough fuel. What is the best way to completely drain and clean out the tank? I don't have a manual and it does not look easy to take the tank out... All help will be greatly appreciated.

1130Leo, My old 966 developed a fuel leak earlier this year, Had Fixed it and flushed it,
so I thought! The inlet fills up with large pieces of rust an starves the engine for fuel and dies! My local IH Parts Man put me on to a strainer of a thing.....
The inlet on the brass cut off valve has a 3/8 pipe sticking up from the threads about 1/2 inch. This strainer I am about to tell you about was sold by my dealer till IH upped the price to some ridiculous amount $70 +. where they used to be about $7 or $8.
Call your local tractor wrecking yard....
You need the strainer that is inside the Head of a York AC Compressor on a 1086 IH. This strainer is about 1/2 inch in diameter and about 2 inchs long. About the size of your pointer finger!
I have not gotten mine yet but my local wrecking yard guy is holding one for me. It is either that or........
use a small piece of screen wire rolled up and the top crimped off held in place by wire or a small clamp! Hope this helps, If you want to visit or If I need to explain more, hollar at me 512-577-3837.

When I changed the filters the fuel in the filters looked very murky, dirty etc... Especially the first filter. I"m guessing there is about an inch of just plain garbage in the bottom of that tank. will it drain thru the filter port of the filter closest to the tank? I was thinking of trying to put a piece of garden hose on that fitting and run the fuel into a bucket???? It appears that the fuel is gravity feed and there is not a pump between the tank and the filter, Is that correct?

1130Leo, Yes, You are correct there is No fuel pump between the tank and the fuel filters. It is gravity/ suction feed! @ times my tractor will starve to the point of Kill. Remove the line from the filter and hear it suck air as I break it loose. Blow air back through into the tank, to clear the line and go again for a while, an hour or half a day before it does it again! Hope this helps!

The only way to thoroughly clean a tank is to remove it. Its not to bad, remove the hood sheet metal, fuel lines and four bolts and lift it out of its frame. Some radiator repair shops will clean them for you, money well spent because with the baffles its tough to get all the little pieces out. Good luck.

One small (Well Large Problem).. It has a Cab on it, and unless I'm wrong, I'd have to remove the cab as well???? I really need to find a reasonably priced manual for this thing, How can there be such a shortage of manuals, every tractor manufactured had to have a manual at one time, there can not possibly be that many tractors still running, where are the gremlins hiding that are eating the manuals.....
