farmall H transmission/5th gear

Thanks for all the tips guys. On looking at the fifth gear closer (and with a flashlight) I can see that the gear is fine but the other gear that it moves forward to engage is gone. I swear that it has been machined off as I can see tool marks such as a lathe would leave and no pits or jagged edges as if the gear had been stripped. Not sure what really happened there but short of replacing that gear the H will never have a fifth. The bolt stopping the slide rail has already been shortened.

There's not a gear for fifth - fifth is direct drive and the input and output shafts are coupled together. I am not sure if there is a sliding coupler but there is no gear.

There is no gear (as ustabe indicates).
The 4th gear just slides slightly forward to lock the shafts together. It is internal to the gear/slider, and much smaller diameter. You have the rare brand new fifth gear and will have no problems at all!!! Jim

Ok, you aren't understanding. The fourth gear has the notches for the coupling that makes fith but there is absolutly nothing for it to couple with. I can see where the teeth of the coupling were but they have been machined off.

Its right.Look on the edge of those machined teeth youll see kinda rounded off sections on each tooth, thats where the slider goes.If your top is off you should be able to slide those gears together, may have to wiggle it a little, or push in the clutch pedal.

Here is a picture. It looks as if the tips of the input shaft were machined away possibly after someone abused it.

OHHH! I see. Looks a though maybe the shaft has slid back to me. Assuming the other end of that shaft is right, yes, you need a new shaft for 5th to work. Can you see the splines up inside the gear on that side?

That is really very interesting. Some one sure did not want a fifth gear in that particular tractor. If these old tractors could just talk.
