H mag update again

I put on proper plug wires, still no fire. I tested the spark on the coil wire again and this time out of 8-10 cranks on the starter I only got one spark. It was blue and looked fine but I couldn't get any more sparks. Can a coil fail intermittently, or should I be looking at the coil cap? How would I tell if there was a carbon trail that was grounding the cap? I am ordering a new coil and will put it in as soon as it comes. I appreciate all of the help folks on this forum have given me and I'm sorry to keep coming back with more dumb questions like this.

Take out the 4 screws that hold the coil cap on, then hold a screwdriver or wire next to the button on the coil & see if the spark is good when it turns over. You will have to pull the mag to change the condenser.

Thanks, I'm saving the questions and answers in a file so I can look back at them. I don't have another condenser to put in it, but I'll order one along with the coil. I tried to get a coil at NAPA but they couldn't find it and our other local store could get one for $80, which seemed high to me. Is another condenser something I should be able to get locally? I had one that I had bought to keep on hand and have now put in, but it cam from this site. Thanks again very much.

When you turn the engine over can you hear the mag (dogs) trip each time? I have had the trip dogs get rusty and hang up and only trip once in a while.

I'm not sure if I understand what you're saying. When I turn it over
by hand I can hear the impulse click like it should. Thanks,
Zach

Well, I don't know. I changed the condenser once with the mag in place, but maybe I shouldn't have. It was a tight fit, but with a bit of wiggling it squeezed in.

I had an M that sat in the barn for ten years and I couldn't get spark. I took the mag to a guy who sat down in a chair with a piece of very fine emery cloth , he folded it in half and stuck it between the point gap and he rubbed and rubbed and rubbed, and he told me that when you think you have rubbed the points enough rub them that long again..then he handed me the mag and told me to take it home and put it on the tractor, about two lifts on the crank and it was running...clean the rotor and the terminals in the cap with fine emery cloth.

Tractor Supply will have an entire tune kit for this mag for less than $20, and the best price on a new coil I can find is $54 delivered to your door, at:

Sofar I've had the joy of rebuilding both a J4 and a H4 mag and the cheapest parts by far has come from this site (YT)They get their's from TISCO but but price still better.I did'nt want to wait on the condenser so I got a IH200 and a IH201 from NAPA (for J4 & H4 repectively)..about 12.00$ ea.
