Check out item # 160444617054,an overdrive for an M??Never saw that before.Do you need to go faster than 5th??

As a kid, one of our neighbors had an M with a Hiesler OD and Dad had a 1940 JD A with a Behlen 5th and 6th. The neighbor kid and I always argued over which was faster, but never had the chance to race (a good thing). Both would do over 20mph top end, which for a narrow row crop tractor is too fast.

There is a guy on this board who has one on a H. Can't remember his name but he put up several pictures. He wanted to know what it did. None of us had seen one before but we guessed it was an overdrive or underdrive. You might start your search with "Overdrive".

No, it is not a 9 speed.

Totally different.

Why not take the time to see for yourself. The link is below. It should have been submitted with the original post.

I made an offer on the gearbox. Can you beat it?
M overdrive on eBay

Wardner, I see that the auction ended. Did you win it? I still can't figure out how it works where the bely pully gear box sits. Is not that just a straight shaft thru there. It's been close to thirty years sense I have owned a M and SMD.

WOW now I have a base price to try to sell mine for. Thanks Doug for pointing that auction out. I have one identical to that on my H and have never seen another, and can't find any information on it as well. I'm glad to find out that I'm not crazy or don't just have some piece of junk that has been modified to fit my tractor.

Really!Does it work?I don"t have an H just an M but I heard that the H has a hard time with its own 5th gear.

Yeah. Right now the tractor is down with a bad gasket. If you push the clutch in, take the trans. out of gear, engage the overdrive, then let out the clutch she will take off like a striped a$$ ape. I've never gotten a speed, but it is faster than 5th. I just would like to know who on earth thought it was a good idea to have a tricycle tractor travelling that quickly. I can't help but think of it as a safety hazard.

Larry,

My low ball offer of $210 was rejected. I like that kind of stuff. I like the rarities.

Part of my problem is I don't have a M. I have a bunch of SMTAs and 400s but I couldn't be sure the attachment would work properly on those tractors. The input gear would mesh but I wasn't sure about the output gear. If I was truly interested, I would have studied my parts book.

One of the drawbacks to that gearbox is that it cancels out the belt pulley. I always can find a use for that power source. Moreover, my tractors never see any road time. In fact, I don't even use fifth gear high range around here.

It sold for $505 on a "Make Offer Bid". That was fair. I thought the "Buy it Now" price was just pie in the sky and wishful thinking. I have been to large public auctions and rarities like that seldom go for more than $500-$600.

Never found a name on housings or any information on who made them. Don't know if more than one type of gear ratio were made. Only ones I know of for M tractors had a gear speed between 4th and 5th. Transmission was put in neutral and add on gear box was engaged.
