yellow Farmall M ?

I just got a good deal on what I thought was a Farmall M. I am not sure of year yet the serial # tag is missing. Is the serial # stamped in anywhere else? I also noticed that the original color paint is yellow. I was told it might be a I6. Are they the same as a M other then paint? Its got live hyd. and a narrow front and very good tin. Everything is there no parts missing. Its in ruff shape from sitting. Motor locked, antifreeze in the oil pan, needs paint bad. Don"t know how antifreeze ended up in the pan its really green. Don"t think it froze. I was looking for a project anyway. I hate seeing old tractors parted out and scraped.

I6 was the industrial version of a W6, which was a standard-tread "wheatland" style tractor. They used the same engine as the M but are a whole different tractor. No I6 or W6's had a narrow front end, so that rules out that possibility.

The yellow paint could either be a primer showing through or it could have been painted that way new if ordered by a highway or road department or some other type of outfit. I've seen yellow M's before, most were from right after the WWII era, I think I remember reading that IH used a different paint around then that faded to yellow.

Does it look anything like this one?

Your tractor may be in industrial M. IH did make those I've seen one or two of them. Some had 6 blade fans and maybe other modifications such as a foot throttle, etc. These were just the industrial version of the M same as they made an industrial version of the A. There should be an engine serial number on the block. I think it is located on the left side, stamped in a raised location near the front of the block. This would not be the same as the tractor serial number, but should not be too far off. You can tell the year of manufacture from the casting codes.

Those 12 cylinder M's were only made early during the war I believe. Most were used as tank retrievers by the French, hence the yellow color.

(quoted from post at 10:25:51 06/14/10) Any idea where I can find the serial # ? The tag is missing on the clutch houseing.

If that tag is missing, you're pretty much out of luck.

The exact serial number for that tractor was only stamped on the serial tag. There is an engine serial number, which might be close, or if the engine has been swapped out, may be way off.

The closest thing you can do is to find a letter cast into the side of the major castings(rearend is a good one). This is year/letter code indicating date cast.the code will read something like this:8 6 Y;(from mySM)indicating August 6,1953.Find thatand count backwards
