if you have a distributor youll need a resistor inline to the 6v coil. Or change the coil out. If you have lights they will need to be changed.

If I were in a fiestier mood, I would say a mirror.........so you can look into it and ask yourself if you really want to convert over to 12 volts.

I have been running the original 6 volt systems for 30 years, and I have had no desire to convert. Keep 'em cleaned, keep 'em tuned, and you will never have a problem.

as always, IMHO.

I always like to hear that. I am a fan of originality and especially in the smaller tractors. I have a SAV I am going to convert BACK to 6v later this summer.

Why would you do that when the 6v will start any decent B at 10 below.Just get the system in shape an save yourself tons of problems unless you like cobbled up systems starting with the mount then lites, coil wiring just to name a few.

If originality is important to you as it seems to be with other posters stick with what you have if not there are advantages to 12 volt altenator. Altenator is more depenable than generator/regulator. 12 volts is more forgiving will work when everything is not in perfect condition. Lights are brighter on 12 volts. Can use any battery charger, many newer chargers will not work on 6 volts. Safer to jump start from modern vehicle. Can use 12 volt electric pump for spraying.
Other than mounting bracket about all you have to change is light bulbs, add resister to coil, if you have battery ignition and rearange wiring.

NDS and Janicholson are also correct. Just because I prefer keeping mine 6 volts, doesn't mean that a 12v alternator system is bad.

I like generators, and I like magnetos........but then I also understand them. I also can rebuild them (for the most part). My best starting tractor is my F20 with a mag. 1/4 crank and it fires right up. Just de-converted a 1946 A from 12v distributor system to 6v system and a mag. ok, so that one takes 1/2 a crank, but what the heck!!!!!!

12V has advatages if you are pressed for time, if you are not mechanically inclined, or if you don't like turning wrenches. There is definately more maint on a 6v generator system than a 12v alternator system. And as other have stated, 12v is more forgiving on a number of fronts. You can also run 12v things like sprayer's, radios, etc. that won't work on 6v.

But working on these is where I derive my fun and relaxation. You need to make the decision of why you are doing it.
