farmall H hydra won't lift mower

Have a early 1940 H, Hydraulics wont lift sickle mower, How do you determine level of hydraulic fluid in tractor? Also what else could be wrong? Thank You Dave K

The reservoir for hydraulic fluid is part of the pump unit. If you look on the right side of the tractor under the gas tank you'll see a pipe sticking up with a cap on top. There was originally a dipstick under the cap but most have fallen out over the years. If I recall right it is supposed to be 6" or 8" down from the top of the neck or something like that. Have you checked on the pump driveshaft to make sure it's turning?

,,,,and from what I read, these earlier pumps were built with more clearance in them, because they ran 30 wt oil in them instead of hydraulic. Nobody likes putting in 30wt. because of cross contamination with other tractors.

If it has no dip stick then just drain it and refill it. It takes six quarts to fill. Then make yourself a measuring rod and mark it at the six quart level.
