Running Without Charging

To start with, I just bought the alternator kit from here.

Since rebuild on my H I've been running a little here and the without generator or alternator. Usually 15 or 20 minute runs. Well, last couple of times I went a little longer, and it developed a problem, lots of black smoke, seems like it couldn't catch up to the fuel. Sputters, died once. Started up right away buy coughed for a few minutes, cleard up a little and got her home. Would this be due to the battery getting low and not supplying a strong enough spark? I adjusted the carb, new super hot plugs, new points etc.

I think that battery must be getting bad. I've heard guys say they've run one all day working in the field with no charge.

You must have a dist thats why the battery is getting low with the mag that doesent need batt voltage you can run a long time. Your batt mite not be up to snuff either as my engine on my portable compresser the has quit charging and it has ran for several hrs starting the engine and so forth without charging but i will need to fix the gen soon.

Could it be the coil? Or condenser? Doesn't seem like the carb would just all of a sudden start sending too much fuel does it?

As I think through this, with my limited knowledge, I keep going to the coil, which I didn't check to see if it was hot. But if I leave it alone for awhile when I come back it's fine, like something cooled off that was causing it.

Yes. I will state that a float can get particles stuck in the needle and seat while running and flood. Then when run fast, the increased fuel flow will open the float farther, and wash it out into the bowl. I would go there first if it keeps doing it. The battery will run it for hours if charged when first started. If it will restart, the battery is not part of the problem. It is possible for the coil to cause the problem by providing such poor spark due to overheating, that it smokes from unburned fuel. If the original coil is in it, it needs a ballast resistor (from a Chevy of mid 1960 vintage) or a 12v coil for use with no ballast resistor. Cheap at the auto parts store. ~20.00. Jim

if you did a 12v conversion from a 6v system and are now using a negative ground, stop at napa and pick up a ballast resistor, they are about 6 dollars. get one for a mid 1970's b body chrysler automobile, the parts guy will know what it is and install it between the coil and the power wire feeding the coil. also, if you changed from a positive ground to a negative, you should reverse the small wires going to the coil.

No, I kept it negative ground, and got a new Pertronix 12V coil. I need a resistor on that?

And would that possibly cause the problem I described?

Thanks G
