Farmall H or M generator question

I know this topic has been covered many times. However, could someone just respond to me. I am
helping my son this weekend with the 6V generator system on his H. We changed all the wires and still can not get the generator to charge. Ampmeter, polarity of the generator or what, I am baffled. The generator was rebuilt. What terminals do I jump to polarize the generator? If that does not work, which terminals on the voltage regulator do I jump so it is a continuous charge from the generator?
Thanks in advance.

You need to have all parts of the system grounded. Use an OHM meter to check gem,reg amd the control that runs the lites all have to have a good ground. Polarize the batt term on the reg to the A terminal on the gen. Also like other post ground the field to srr if that makes it charge if it does the reg is bad and if it dont the gen isnt working but check all the componets for ground first.

The generator can be made to operate on both positive and negative ground. That's the reason for polarizing. Momentarily jumping the battery terminal and "A" terminal is all it takes.
You can test the generator without removing it from the tractor. Disconnect the "F" terminal, then remove the belt and jump the battery and "A" terminals together. The generator shold spin like a motor. If it doesn't, make sure the battery terminal on the regulator has battery voltage to it. While you have it motoring, ground the "F" terminal. The generator should slow down but continue to motor. If the generator does all of that, it's OK. I always test wires by passing current with a headlight bulb through them. An ohmmeter test is not a good test because the wire could have only 1 strand making the connection. An ohmmeter uses a slight amount of current and 1 wire strand can easily carry it. The headlight bulb will not light very brightly on that one strand. If the wires and generator all pass the test, replace the regulator.

As Gene Bender stated, pay particuliar attention to the ground between the cover and the light switch box. If you haven't had the cover off, before removing it to check that ground, place an external ground wire from the cover to to some point on the tractor.

The lights work fine. I rewired them yesterday as well as a complete wiring harness. Still no change in the generator. Grounded the field on the generator and there was no change. Therefore, it must be a faulty generator or regulator. Correct?
