which is bad and need changing- the seat spring or the shock or both ??

On every bump, or if you pop the clutch, the seat bottoms out.

The key to remember with any suspension is that the spring sets the "ride height" and the shock absorber controls the rate of motion. So, if you sit on it (obviously without moving around) and the seat has used almost all of its travel, the spring is fatigued or has too low of a rate. If you push the seat down and quickly lift up and the seat never leaves contact with your hand on the return trip, the shock is likely worn out, as it has lost its dampening qualities. The shock absorber should resist motion. So when you lift up, the seat should return slower than your hand. Typically the shock will weaken as temperature increases, because the oil will become less viscous (thinner).

How big a guy are you? At 6' and 275 I had a "wore out" seat on my SH. I ended up cutting a second spring down in stages until I got the ride where I wanted it. The cut down spring fits nicely inside the original.

Odds are the spring is getting tired, AND the shock is shot.

Just remember, the spring holds the weight, and the shock takes out a lot of the bounce.
