Low 1st gear on IH Model H

I purchased a '42 and a '52 Farmall H from a neighbor before being scrapped. Being an AC guy, I'm not familiar with Farmalls. Both motors are Locked up. Is there any way of telling from the serial numbers if either tractor has a low-low first gear? Would like to have one running for stock tractor pull if one has the low gearing.

Yes, there will be a suffix letter code after the serial number which will tell you what, if any, special features it has. Let me know what the suffix codes are and I will tell you what they stand for.

'42 FBH 58777 (no suffix)

'52 FBH 387399 X-1

Andrew is correct.

The '42 H was built to burn the cheap low octane distilate fuel of the day, that is why there is no letter suffix, and X1 means gas engine.

X1A gas engine with low speed gears
X3A Kerosene engine, low speed gears
