IH 656 T/A question

I have a '73 IH 656 Utility with a T/A. When the T/A clutch lever is pushed forward, in Direct Drive, the T/A clutch is engaged, correct? (DD on the tach and the tractor is moving faster). When the T/A clutch lever is pulled back ("T/A marked on the tach and the tractor is moving slower) the T/A clutch is disengaged. Is this correct?

So, if the T/A clutch is slipping, you will notice it in Direct Drive, or when the clutch lever is pushed forward. Correct?

Happy Easter and I appreciate your help!

You got it right .If its slipping you will notice it under load when you push the TA lever ahead. Mine will work just fine unless i use it under load than it slips a little before it engages. Erik..

Yes, if the TA clutch is slipping you will notice it in direct drive. If the TA sprag [?SP] one way clutch is slipping it will be with the lever back. Most times when TA's are said to be out it is in the rear lever or TA position. The tractor will stop when the TA lever is pulled.

Thanks for your responses!

So there is really no way to "save" the T/A. Either way you push the lever (DD or T/A), some part of the T/A is working and not bypassed?

Bottom line was I'm using the tractor for general utility use and wanted to "save" the T/A so I could prolong its life, if that makes sense.

Best way to prolong the TA's life is to properly adjust the clutch and TA shift linkage. Search the archives the procedure has been given countless times. It is actuality better to use the TA, it prevents the sprag rollers and ramps from getting flat spots.
