Cylinder Head Gasket

1930 McCormick-Deering 22-36
Just got my head back from the machine shop.
Ready to install.
Head gasket question:
Got the gasket from Fordson House.
One surface has the printing, "Thermoseal Klingersil C-4408 and is the slightly grayer, slightly smoother, slightly shinier surface.
The other surface has no writing on it.
Is there a preference for which surface goes to the block?
Thanks,
Tom

I would just give them a call nice folks to deal with. I called them for just such a question when i rebuilt a Regular.

There should be a crimped portion around the "fire ring" of each cylinder. The "lip" portion of the crimp should be to the head. The smooth side to the block. Sealers such as alumininum paint, Indian Head gasket material or Avaiation gasket sealer, (permatex product) all work well... just make sure you have it right the first time, and be sure to re torque the head after you've started it up and warmed up the engine. You'll be surprised how much you'll have to tighten the headbolts (or nuts) after its run a bit.
