Should I Buy This H???

So I am thinking about buying this H. There is no pictures to help you out but I can tell you all I know about it. The motor is stuck but the exhaust is covered. It has been sitting for about 10-15 years. It needs one rear tire. It is not all rusted out. It may need both rear rims replaced. It does have a dipstick on it which I thought was weird. But it is still 6 volt and will need a complete tune up.

Well...... its alot of work. As for the dip stick it could be 2 things 1st, a M&W dip stick, pretty rare not likely, 2nd a latter block put in ie 300 or 350 block. You would have to check the cast numbers on it and see what you have for sure. If you can get it for under 450 or so you may have a chance at not loosing you shirt. Either way you will have to dump in a lot of money. I guess it depends if the price is right and how much you want that H. Just keep in mind that you can get a good running H for 750 - 1200 range.

Good luck
Andrew

Ditto on the price. I paid $800 for my running H with poor rear rubber and marginal tin.
Yours will need a whole lot more than a tune-up if the motor is stuck!

"But it is still 6 volt and will need a complete tune up."

With a stuck engine after 10/15 years you might need more than a tune up. If the sales price is any more than scrap weight I wouldn't consider it.

(quoted from post at 08:11:59 03/17/10) He wants 300 for it. It hasnt been stuck for that long but thats jsut how long it has sat.

It's worth $300. Scrap is at $230 a ton here in SC WI. That's your only competition. An H should weigh around 5000 lbs, but they will dock you for the tires. Figure it is worth about $400 as scrap. I was going to say offer him $250, but you don't want him to get ------ and scrap it.

I already tried to get the tractor 2 years ago. I offered him 250 and he didnt take it. I then found a running H with a loader and decent rubber for 600. I rebuilt that engine and she still dont run right so I am looking for a different tractor that i can use to mess around on. I also can buy a running h for 500 with decent rubber. I am in the logging business and need a tractor to haul big logs with. Do you have any other ideas to what tractor would be good for that?

I've done occasional casual logging with both a Super H and a Super M. I much prefer the M as it weighs about 1,500 lb more - it pulls much heavier logs safely.

However the M occupies the same footprint on the ground as the H (same width and length) so it's just as manueverable.

Given the choice I'd be looking for something the size of an M myself.

I agree with Bob, if your looking at moving large logs the M is better, However with that said i use a H most of the time due to fuel economy. We have a Super H, M, and Super MD. But still run the H with 6 sets of weights on it... IF the H wont move it then we grab the Super MD not to much argues with that critter.

why don't you find someone with the experience to help you get the H you already have to run right.. Makes more sense to get what you already have fixed before you go looking for something worse off to fix.

Best advice here. Get that H running right then see if it does what you want it to do. But I would guess that the others with experience know best, and the SM sounds like the better bang for the buck.

If you rebuilt one engine and it "don't run right" why would you do another one? Until you can get the rebuilt one running I'd use that as my "test mule".
What exactly is happening to the rebuilt H? Maybe we can help you get that going.

It wont idle up fast. It just bogs down. I cant drive it in 4th or 5th gear because I cant get enough fuel. Lines arnt plugged. Ive rebuilt the craburator and have a new sediment bowl. It may be the govenor. It is an M&W more power govenor. There is just no power to it anymore. i also but stepped head piston in it and i live in SE South Dakota. Do I have any adjustments to make on the carb or anything.

Maybe rust in the tank? Lots of posts in the archives on gas tanks. Pull your fuel line or the plug in the bottom of the carb and drain it with a hose into a gas can. You should have full flow for at least 5 minutes or longer. Watching it run for a few seconds won't cut it. Do you have an inline filter to get rid of? Main jet should be out about 5 turns.
