Thanks for the picture, interesting the tractor looks like a 400 D with a white cover on the grill, or is it painted white?

Yabut, Dave,

I can see what you mean because there is no white decal on the hood sheet. However, if you blow up the picture, it appears that the steering wheel is four-spoked. Did any 400s use the later wheel?

That cover on the grill is a dust screen to keep more dirt out of the radiator. It was an option for dusty jobs like baling, corn picking, corn shelling, and stalk chopping. Our 560D had that screen on year around as we did a lot of shelling when we were not in the field. Armand

This is the Electrall motor tag. There is no hp value but it is around 10 hp and uses 208V, 3 phase. I think its only application was on model 55 balers. If there were other apps, I would like to know about them.

wow, i never knew that those Electrall were rated for 208v and 3 phase. When those things are cranking out there max out put do they really load the tractor ? or is it like running a belt pulley cord wood saw ie no real load.

Andrew

Yeah, and at full output it couldn't have been much more than barely adequate to run the baler... You could get around 50HP out of the PTO shaft on a stout 400.

On top of that, the Electrall isn't "live" PTO since it runs off the belt pulley drive gear.

The 1950s were chock full of all sorts of crazy ideas. I'm sure IH intended this to replace PTO driven equipment as a safer, lower-maintenance alternative... No shaft to get tangled up in, and no U-joints to fail.

...I wouldn't be surprised if using the electrall as a backup generator at the barn was only an afterthought for the designers...

The electrall was turning anytime the engine was, they were driven by a gearbox above the IPTO drive gear.

(Heading)
Steering wheel attachment 20" diameter Farmall 400 series tractors.
New 20" dia. steering wheel attachment # 363170R91, consisting of steering wheel # 557282R91 and providing for deduction of regular 18" wheel is made available for factory application on farmall 400 series tractors.
New wheel is the same as was used on regular production on late SW6TA and SW6TAD.
Reason-to reduce steering effort over the atndard wheel.
Available on order.
Service parts will be furnished.
Above is from a IH bulletin.
Wardner if it wasn't a 400 in Sept. 56, it would be preproduction.

The Electrall motor is a lot more "stout" than a C-60 engine as found on Model 55 balers. It is a farm service motor and rated for high overloads and high power/service factors.

As D Slater says, the Electrall generator is "live". Its output was turned off/on with a dash mounted electrical push/pull switch that controls the small exiciter generator.

As far as I know, only the belt pulley and cotton picker PTO are driven off the belt pulley drive gear. Elwood transfer cases also don't run off the belt pulley drive gear. Picture below shows the constant mesh Electrall gearbox. If the engine fan is turning, the Electrall is rotating.

Standby generation was not an afterthought. All the advertising I have seen cleatly includes that concept.

Andrew,

Here is the tag on the Electrall Generator. Three seeparate services could be connected simutaneously without going through a breaker panel.

110V single ph
208V single ph
208V three ph

A 400 has enough power to run 4 Electralls. If I had two more Electralls, I would add them to my double Electrall F-400.

I know that it is hard to see but the ad has three tractors in it,last page is a SMT, page 2 is a 400, and page 1 is 400 with some word as long as 400 but only about 3/4 in high right above it and is all red w/wire cover on front. This is a General Electric ad, some where i have a International Harvester ad.
