oil seal removal

I've removed a couple of oil seals, but none the (apparently) easy way. I end up prying them out after tearing up the outer rim of the seal. I'm sure there is a better way. Could someone suggest a better way, cuz the next one to be removed is in the TA housing, without much access or leverage. thank you!

One of the tools commonly sold for such a job is a flat bar, the working end of which is also of flat bar stock with two ends in roughly the shape of a hammer claw. Works on the same principle. Hook one of the claws under the shell of the seal, then rock it back against the outside of the other claw and pull. Another way that doesn't invovle a specialty tool, is to get two, three or four screws into the shell of the seal and use another prying tool (something like a pry bar with a notch for cutting or pulling nails) to pry on the undersides of the screw heads.

I have an attatchment for my slide hammer kit that adapts vice grips to the end of the slide hammer. Put a screw or screws in the seal and pull it with the slide hammer. Also a cheap auto body dent puller will do the same thing. Be careful when drilling and putting screws into the seal as to stay away from the shaft.
