super m head gasket

i overhauled my super m during the summer and i also put a new block in it, the block was checked and plained, the head was gone through and plained, everything was checked and gone through. just for the hell of it i loosened the drain plug the other day and about 2 or 3 bottle caps full of anitfreeze came out. the only thing i can think of is that once the head was torqued down i had to remove it rite away and i used the same head gasket but i put copper sealer on it, do you think that maybe the head gasket is bad now? why else would it be leaking antifreeze in the oil? Should i retorque the head and see if that helps or just replace the head gasket or just leave it alone?

Personally, I would do a cyl pressure test on each cyl to confirm or deny leakage into cooling system. You said you resurfaced the block, how is the sleeve flange height now. Was counter bore changed to maintain proper sleeve flange height. Reusing a head gasket is not a good idea as the compression rings of gasket on sleeve were crushed into place and most likely will not seal correctly. Has it ever been done , sure, but not good practice. Pressure testing will show up a leak though if done properly. If that checks out, I would pressurize cooling system with pan off and look for anti freeze leak from below. The one thing I would not do is just put on a new head gasket without first doing some diagnosis.

counter bore and everything were all done properly. how will a pressure test tell me if my head gasket is bad? how do you suggest doing the pressure test?

Pressure test of cyl is done in each individual spark plug hole with piston at tdc. Any leakage past headgasket will show up as bubbles in radiator. I use a cyl leakage tester which in my opinion is better to determine the condition of an engine than a compression test, although I use that also. Not having a leakage tester, you can just braze a fitting onto a spark plug and hook up air hose. Works best if you have a regulator so you can gradually increase pressure.

(quoted from post at 21:24:21 01/18/10) where would be the best place to buy a leakage tester. thanks
Your better auto parts stores should carry one. Of course there is always the internet. They want $40. As I searched they only go up from there. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ct...51326&zmas=12&zmac=112&zmap=94190 BTW these testers are also usefull for a few other tests. You can pinpoint bad rings and valves with them as well.

I am of a different opinion on this one than Pete. I would do the cyl test, but I would not pull the oil pan and screw around there. By the time you pull the oil pan and do all that jazz you could just throw a head gasket on it. I would CERTAINLY retorque the head (since the manual calls for it anyhow) and test/run it again. Even if the head gasket was on and torqued only for a few minutes it still wasn't the same as a brand new gasket.

yeah the first thing im gonna do is get it nice and warm and retorque the head gasket, it probly wont fix the problem but you never know.
