How do you install a hand clutch on an H

I just recently bought a 1952 Farmall H for parts and it has the optional M&W hand clutch on it and I want to put it on my 45 H and was wonder the fundamentals of removing and installing an M&W hand clutch.

i think the guy you need to talk to is nebraska kirk. if i remeber he has parts for the hand clutchs and may have manuals too. you can catch him on cowmans board, here is a link

(quoted from post at 08:42:56 01/01/10) I just recently bought a 1952 Farmall H for parts and it has the optional M&W hand clutch on it and I want to put it on my 45 H and was wonder the fundamentals of removing and installing an M&W hand clutch.

I will describe the process to the best of my ability, if you are unclear as to any of the steps, feel free to ask for more detailed instructions or I would be willing to describe the process to you over the phone as well.

1. unhook the brake linkage
2. remove the large cast iron cover

Now, if the fiber disc teeth are not stuck to the inside of the toothed drum, then you can slide everything out of the drum as a single unit. If the teeth are stuck, then go on to step #3

3. unscrew the large nut off the now exposed shaft
4. slide off the cam assembly
5. remove the outer pressure plate, try not to loose the 6 springs that are behind it
6. There are now alternating steel and fiber discs that need to be removed. 3 fiber and two steel. Be very careful to not damage them. New steel discs are not available new unless custom made, new fiber discs are available but expensive. I would imagine the discs are rust bonded to each other and to the inside of the drum. Be patient and use plenty of penetrating oil.
7. once the last fiber disc is removed, you can remove the inner pressure plate and shaft together.
8. remove the seal retainer, 3 screws hold it on.
9. remove coil snap ring off end of hollow shaft and then the drum will slide off.

Now is the difficult part, the part remaining in the tractor has to be pulled out, BUT before that can be done, you will have to go into the rear end, either remove the top cover or go in through the PTO hole. The left axle has to be pulled out of the bull gear and the bull gear slid out of the notch in the pinion gear housing where the bull gear engages the pinion gear. Once this is done, then you can remove the 6 bolts holding the pinion gear housing in, thread two of the bolts into the two threaded holes provided and screw them in, thus pulling out the pinion gear and it's housing.

To install just reverse my instructions.

I can supply you with a copy of an owners/installation manual too if you would like.

I have a M&W on my M,just remember your power goes through that M&W first before it goes to your standard clutch,so you really cant do tractor pulls or heavy duty pulling, because when you burn up the disks thats it.

As a matter of fact, my M&W manual recommends that no heavy pulling be done with a tractor equipped with the M&W clutch. They are designed mainly for PTO work.

just read your post, i have a super h with a m&w hand clutch. you said heavy pulling is not a good idea. would a 2-14 plow be to much for that clutch to handle?

I am sure the clutch would handle it fine, as long as it is adjusted correctly it will not slip even under very heavy load. I have a '47 M with a hand clutch and I have plowed a few times with it, even in very hard ground. I have powered out and spun out without any sign that the hand clutch was slipping.

My personal opinion is that, as long as the clutch is in good shape and adjusted correctly, some occasional plowing will not hurt it. I just would not plow all day for days on end like what these tractors did originally. Keep in mind that heavy pulling puts extra stress on the M&W clutch parts, very few replacement parts are available new and a limited supply of used parts.

I hate to disagree but we brought a '51 M in 1961 that had a M&W hand clutch and it did the same work as our 400 did including pulling a #16 3X14in. plow and a 14ft. #37 tandem disc. It was also the lead tractor in a tandem tractor hitch pulling a #16 4X14in. plow and the same disc. Never had a bit of trouble with the hand clutch. In the fall it had a mounted 2ME corn picker on it so the M&W clutch got used then. So I would say use that puppy and enjoy it!!!!!! Armand

I am glad to hear you had good luck with your clutch. What little plowing I did with my M&W clutch equipped M, the hand clutch worked fine. But, because new fiber discs are expensive and major parts are only available used (unless you are lucky enough to find new old stock) I would be hesitant to do a lot of heavy pulling with my M

I have a M & W clutch and would like to have a manual and would pay copying and shipping costs. Thanks, Jon.

Check out the vintage ads. I had posted the manual in there a few years ago. Search M&W or my handle. I have one on my Super M that I take to pulls. Only slipped once and only because I didn't have it adjusted correctly.
