removing a piston from a 606 gas IH

I just come across a bad piston in my 606. I am not much of a motor guy but I would like to replace this piston myself for experience. I was wondering if anyone could give me a few pointers on how to do this and any helpful tips I may need. Thank-you!!

Yes I have the head removed. Five of the pistons look good, but there is one that I can almost push a pencil down the side of it.

pull the pan off. unbolt con. rod from crank tap up on rod bolts with the handle of ball peen hammerto loosen cap and remove. install 2 short pieces of rubber hose over cap bolts to protect crank from getting scratched. and push out piston with your hammer handle.most likly will want to remove them all to check out things like skirt for scuffing , ring groove wear, and wrist pin wear.wear on sleeves.like what is the deal with just one piston, engine history?

If that engine has sleeves you probably need to replace the sleeve & piston, but if it doesn't have a sleeve that cylinder probably needs to bored oversize. Its a lot of work to to fix one cylinder and while you have it apart do a complete rebuild. You probably need to have that crankshaft measured for wear too. If you just do a patch job you will be tearing that engine down later. Hal

If there's a ridge at the top of that cylinder you will need to use a ridge reamer. Since it sounds worn you may be able to remove the piston and connecting rod. Remove the oil pan after draining the oil. Unbolt the rod cap and push on the connecting rod with the handle of a hammer and your piston should slide out. Hal

Mark your rod cap and side of the rod so the rod goes back in the same direction and the cap fits the same way.

Might take a look at all your bearings while you are at it. But then sometimes you may want to leave well enough alone.

Post back with how the piston, rings, and sleeve look. I suppose you can buy just one.

Since we are still on this topic, I was now wondering where I could find some torque values in order to put this engine back together. Are they in the Tech manual? I have one coming in the mail and am waiting patiently. Also, what assembly lube works best for the rebuild?
