Farmall M Charging Problem

1947 M , converted to 12v years ago. When running, no matter what rpm, ammeter sporadically pegs to charge side. I metered at battery and voltage runs normal at 14.5 but jumps to 18.5 when ammeter pegs. I am assuming something is shorting out. Anyone run across this problem? Where should I look first?

Most after market gauges dont read correctly, get one for ih. might fix problem? Hope all tractor lovers have a good thanksgiving.Rick

Alt Delco 10SI Can't remember if wired as one wire or three wire. I will look. This alt has been on for maybe 15 years, Worked fine untill a few weeks ago. Battery wouldn't hold charge. Replaced battery then noticed that ammeter was acting up.

sounds like you got good service out of that alternator. Likely the regulator or another component inside has given up the ghost. check the grounding of the alternator case to tractor first, but I think you may need to rebuild or replace that alternator.

check the integrity of the other wiring and connections too. especially the sense wire.

If you have the three wire alternator, if the #2 sense terminal is corroded or loose it will do just that, also where ever this sense lead is connected to, if that checks ok, it would be regulator, like wise if single wire unit , regulator.
