stearing on combine

we run a 1460 combine (yea still) & are having problems with a leak on the steering colume, also we get a noise &jerking when steering. what is the cause? need help
 
I'd visit the parts yard--you can sink a bunch of money into fixing it. What do you mean "still"? We're still running a 1460 & 1440 for our corn & bean machines. 1440 has over 6000 hrs. on it. We saw a newer [2166?] with the engine out of it, & the rear engine seal was being replaced. The mechanic said to take care of the old machines--new ones aren't built as good.
 
Like Brownie450 said, still. Out here where I live there is one farmer and his son that crop 2800 acers and use a 1460 and a 915. Yes I said a 915 and I love to watch them work together. I look at it like this, they are putting more money in the bank than say like my brother inlaw trading every two years on new machines that break down every time you turn around. My cousin bought a BRAND NEW New holland because his two year old combine was giving so much trouble this fall and the SECOND DAY in the field a rod came out the block. The new John Deere my inlaw bought, trouble everyday. I don't row crop farm anymore but if I did, I would be using a 915, 1440 something like that!
 
I'm not a combine mechanic per se, but I did have to do the engine work and some hydraulic work on them. Hard to beat the 1460 all around. Depending on hydraulic system you have, original or later electric over hydraulics, there was considerable changes and alterations made in regard to the steering being jerky etc and I am sure an experienced combine mechanic could steer you in the right direction to correct it. I do not have service bulletin for combines but I know there were some addressing the problem. Far as leak, I'll assume it is coming out of steering shaft and a pretty easy fix.
