Does anybody know for sure if the late model 400's grill and side ever painted white?? Also, does anybody know about the transmission being reversed and how they did it? I have a 400 that was used as a cotton harvestor and the shifter is in a different spot. getting ready to restore tractor, any info would be great!

The 450 had the white grille and side panels. 400 was all red. After the 400 was overhauled and up graded to 4.125 pistons, people would paint them too look like the 450s.

If your shifter is in the right hand hole that means that the differential ring gear is on the left hand side. This will mean reverse operation with five gears in reverse if tractor looks otherwise normal.

Does it run? Have you driven it? Are there drop boxes hung off the outer end of the rear axle housings? Some are chain drive and others are gear drive. They will also affect direction of travel.

Put up a few pictures and we will tell you what you have.

Like Wardner says, you need to see what directions it operates. It sounds to me like you have a tractor that is set up for a low drum picker. You will have to flip the differential and install standard shift forks and move the shift to the other side to make it run 5 forward/1 reverse.

Farmall 400's were all red from the factory.

Either the 350 or 450, I don't think both are, are still available from CaseIH, or were in the last year or so. Have never looked on the aftermarket.
