Found an odd duck today - W450D?

I went to look at a 'diesel W-4' or so I was told. Anyway, after getting there I discover it's a W450D with TA. It's in pretty hard shape but I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything more about them. From what I gather they were pretty low production. It's got a couple of 'extras', one of which is some form of PTO drive off the top of the belt housing. I believe the tractor to have been used in road construction/maintenance for most of its life. Just how rare is this thing? Is it worth resurrecting or is there no value to them at all? Thanks, Sam

It is the Wheatland, or Standard tread version of a Farmall 450D.

According to Guy Fay's book, about 1100 of them were made.

It's a wheatland style tractor. Basically the replacement for the W-6. Pics may come if I get back to look at it again. Sam

Now you got me going. I have a W-400 LP with a delete plate over the belt pulley hole. Buy the tractor and send me the "some form of PTO".

On the other hand, don't post a picture. It will just amplify my advanced state of tractor envy.

The following is a list of attachments I have seen fitted to the belt pulley opening.

Belt pulley
Elwood 4 wheel drive transfer case
Cotton picker PTO
That odd Creeper attachment we saw on Friday fitted to a H

It also may be an Electrall gearbox driver. That would be mounted ahead of the belt pulley opening and over the LPTO driving gear. It is constant mesh without a selector lever.

OK, post the picture. I can't take the tension of not knowing what it is.

First off - I think it's mounted ahead of the belt pulley opening. The shaft points directly rearward at about 6" above the top of the transmission housing. The shaft is approximately 1 1/4" diameter with fairly coarse (maybe 12-16) splines. Didn't see a selector lever. Could you perhaps post a couple of pics and I'll let you know if it looks anything like what you have. I don't have pics and won't for a little while. Thanks, Sam

yes they have value to the right person and is very worth restoring due to the low #s produced. its not something to junk.

So far as I can tell the tractor is only missing the carb, the sediment bowl for the diesel, and most of the crome emblems. The grill is a bit bent and the backs of the fenders have seen better days. Other than that it looks fairly straight and complete. All of the tires are shot, and it's been sat outside for at least 10 years and probably hasn't run for 20. I didn't try to turn the engine, but the transmission is stuck (won't shift). I would leap at it but I've already got a 300 and a SMD in the line up waiting for attention. That said it's rare and I'd hate to pass it up (and I love that red/cream combo). Thanks, Sam

If it looks like this, I'll buy it. Reply to wardner@peoplepc dot com.

You mentioned that the tractor might have been used in road construction. At least one company built hot-top pavers around IH supplied engines/frames. I saw one many years ago but can't remember anything about except it was based on a 460 and had high crop drop boxes.

I would say it looks exactly like the one in the lower picture, less the pulley. I don't know if the guy who has the tractor will even sell it yet so when I find out I'll try to get some pics. Sam

Both pictures are of the same unit taken from opposite sides.

I can send the cover plate that replaces the gear box.

Is there a cast bracket on the right side of the clutch housing?

Heck, I can even go to Nova Scotia. I need to go to Maine (from eastern Massachusetts) in the near future. Hoping you are in the northern part of the Province.

Make a deal with the owner. You won't regret it. Thanks

I don't know/can't remember about the bracket. There are a number of add ons on the tractor as I was told it may have had a sweeper on it at some point and it has what look like push bars on the front and back. Making any deal is entirely dependent on the owner deciding if he wants to sell it or not. I did mention though that sooner would be better than later as once the ground freezes it'll be there until spring. I am, by the way, in central NS. Not very far from where Hugh MacKay used to live. All of that said though, if I do get the tractor I don't know if I'd want to part with the gearbox as the ability to run an air compressor and generator would come in darn handy at times. Sam

You would be better off running an air compressor and generator from the belt pulley. It can be shifted in and out of gear. I installed both on a SMTA many years ago. I don't have a good picture as I removed it. I will probably install the combo set-up on my W-400 later this month and shoot some pictures.

Anyway, you know that I am interested in what you found so work that angle. As for going to Nova Scotia, I am not sure that can be done now without a passport. Just send some pictures and maybe we can work a deal. Thanks.

Quite possibly you're right about the belt pulley drive, it was only a thought. If I do get hold of the tractor I will certainly send you some pics and we could talk then. Sam
