Seized H band brake spring clevis rods

I have read numerous posts about freeing up rusted and seized spring clevis rods on the H
brake adjusters. I have tried soaking them in penetrating oil and heating the end of the barrel at the jamb nut where the rod enters all to no avail. The rods are threaded deeply into the adjuster and I am afraid to heat the barrel down inside the spring for fear of losing the spring temper. I was thinking about grinding off the tack welds that hold the spring captive and then removing the internal threaded barrel to apply heat without affecting the spring. My question is has anyone ever done this? How much tension and what is the free length of the compressed springs? If I succeed in freeing up the adjuster rods will I be able to compress the spring and tack weld the retainer back in place? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The spring is not in a compressed state until you very firmly apply the brake pedal with your foot.
There are hundreds of other useable adjusters at salvage yards; why fight this one?
