1086 ring gear timing marks

I am new to this. We have removed the injection pump and had it repaired without lining the engine up first(wrong I now know)To time I know that I have to get the ring gear lined up to 18 degrees and have found that mark. What I need to know is where is the pointer to line up with the 18? I can"t find that anywhere. Is it the cover bolt hole?

On the 86 series tractors the timing marks were moved to the front crank shaft pulley. Line up the correct marks. After bleeding the injectors, if it doesn't start, or if it does start and puts out a lot of smoke and no power, turn the injection pump shaft one turn and try again.

It doesn't seem logical that the engine would run with the injection of fuel coming at the end of the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke but I've seen it happen on several different engines.

Owen is correct the timming marks are on the front pully there is a pointer on the front cover. there is a pointer and line on the injection pump gear flange on the pump
the engine needs to be on TDC then 18 deg. if you don't want to remove the valve cover you could take the chance and try it. you have a 50/50 chance it will run correctly. I have seen them start and run 180 deg out it will fill the shop with smoke in seconds.
I would remove the valve cover and get #6 (rear cyl) valves rocken then mount your pump. it wouldn't hurt to do a valve adjustment when your in there. be sure to hold the pump shaft with a socket and line up the marks and tighten the gear bolts, the pump wants to turn off the marks on it's own.
good luck Ed

Is it possible that some 86 series didn't have marks on front pulley? I find part numbers but no marks to indicate timing. Also the only thing that would possibly be a pointer is a pointed self tapping bolt. I did find the marks on the ring gear but still no pointer. The hole in the housing is rather rough edged so there appears to be nothing like a "mark" Thank you for your clear reply.

If there are no marks on pulley and you do have marks on flywheel, there should be a pointer made of stamped light metal and is held on with same bolts that hold the little cover on. It is cover on right upper side of clutch housing and not lower cover.. Just eyeball straight across from the two bolt holes that hold cover on and straight down to flywheel and you will be good to go. Finding number one compression versus number six has already been covered.
