Proper lead length for water temp gauge?

My '44 H has an after market gauge with way too much lead length. I had to spool up the extra. I'd like to have a "clean" look under the hood, but I'm not sure about how length affects operation. Is there such a thing as too short?

What is the "standard" lead length for a Farmall H's water gauge? Can the length be adjusted?

i dont have the actual length right now but there is diff. lengths available. too short would be when you install it and then it dont reach the fitting in the head, thats too short.but long or short it dont make any diff. for operation. the longer one might take a bit longer to register thats all.no you cant adjust them once the cable is cut thats kapoot for the guage.

Length cannot be adjusted. Probe, connecting tube & guage are all a single sealed unit. Expanding fluid in the probe end increases pressure to operate the needle.

I thought you wanted originality. There are numerous suppliers with the correct gauge.

Mike, OEM's catalog shows the lead length being 19" long. Their catalog states the part no. for a 1944 H as 63783D with a $82.50 price. I think their gauges are accepted as being correct as they have the correct logo of the period and the original Rochester Gauge face plate and original looking pointer. Hope this helps, Hal.

I do. But don't know what the "correct" length was. I'm assuming it's the 2' option.

$83 is way to rich for my blood. I'll be going with a more affordable gauge from a different supplier.

The gauge you want is 63783D for 1939-1946 models or 67135D for 1947-up. I don't remember the year of yours, early one has IHC logo, later IH, both have 19" leads. Call Mike at Steel Wheel Ranch, he doesn't need the number and will sell it for less. 785-548-7437. You can find a lot of the details you ask on www.oemtractorparts.com. If you don't like their prices, buy it from someone else.
