I am repainting my 48 H seat. It is the spring, shock absorber type non tilting seat. I can get the bolt out of the right side at the front pivot point where the rubber bushings are located. I have been unable to get the bolt out of the left side as there is no way to hold the center piece that it screws into because the right side unscrews. Is the left side a left hand bolt or do I need to know a trick about how to hold the center section so I can unscrew the second right had thread bolt. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Bill,

I had the same problem but ended up breaking off the bolt on the left side because of rust.

The bolts have the same type threads, counterclockwise turns loosen the bolts.

Did you try spraying WD-40 into the side where you removed the bolt and let it sit overnight? Then try using thin-nosed vise grips to hold the rubber bushing on the side with the stuck bolt.

I had same problem with my seat. I did like wfd2
but don't over tighten the vise grip cause the thread ends will bend. btdt

No, I haven't tried that. Does the bushing slide over that center piece which I assume is round? Just wondering if I could get the bushing off and
be able to get vicegrips on the center piece. While we were corresponding I thought about getting a jam nut and putting it on the right side bolt outside the support steel and trying to tighten everything up against the support steel to hold the right side bolt. Maybe washers between the inside of the support and the end of the center piece would work if the bushing slides over the center piece.

Thanks Bill Perry

Rubber bushings are only on each side, with a metal threaded rod in the center. The threaded rod goes through to the opposite side.

How good are the bushings? I replaced mine because the thought of the seat falling backwards, flipping me back off the tractor while I was pulling my Woods C80 brush cutter wasn't too appleaing. The new rods are only around $25 on ebay.

I've attached a picture to show you what it looks like inside. You might be better off trying to cross thread another bolt into the side that you removed the bolt from, then try to remove the frozen bolt, then just replace the entire assy. Probably safer that way, too.

Some things aren't worth the effort. Those bolts are readily available. Cut it off and replace.

Bill: With the shock disconnected swing the seat frame over, you will see a hole about 1/4" or perhaps 3/8" in size. Drill down through the hole and into the metal center piece inside. Then, insert and hold a good size punch down into the hole you drilled into the center piece. That will keep the internal center piece from spinning when you back out on the bolt.
